Since today is Valentine’s Day, many of us are focused on celebrating the love that we have for our spouses and others whom we care deeply about. Of course, this is appropriate since God’s Word says: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25). At the same time, I am struck by the final statement of this verse which reveals how much Christ loved the church. He gave Himself for her! As Christian parents, we want nothing more to see our children saved by the grace of God. We pray for the Lord to open their hearts. We teach them God’s Word so that they will know God and His plan of salvation. We bring them to church so that they will hear the gospel preached and see sinners transformed by the gospel.
